Experience
in paper conservation shows that most of the deterioration found
on
works
of art on paper, is
the result of the use of non-appropriate
materials and techniques for protection. The
use of acidic board for windows and backing, placing the work in
direct
contact with the glass or a wooden backing, or hinging the valuable
artwork with non suitable tapes are some of the practices that
accompany
most of the works
that need conservation treatment. Many
such
works
of art will show evidence of damage such as discolouration (darkening
to a brown tone), mount burns, foxing (small brown sports),
yellowing, staining and fading.
At
Aquatint we strongly advise framing valuable works to
museum standards. To achieve
this
goal, we can provide:
- Museum grade protective mounts: construction of tailored window mounts and backings using only museum board (100% cotton) and archival materials and techniques.
- Framing: When framing a restored work of art, sometimes
a decision should be made about adaptation
of
the original frame or
making a new one. In both situations, and thanks to collaboration
with experienced framers and frame restorers,
we can include this service if needed. Once the frame is ready to be
used, and by carrying out
framing
to
museum standards we will ensure that no damaging materials will be in
contact with the work (boards, tap
es and fillets). Finally the work
will be protected against external environmental variations, UV radiation and
physical
risks
such as abrasion, impact and handling. The assembling of the work
will be done in-house, thus
also ensuring safe transit of
the restored item with
the
work ready for enjoyment and display.
